EU CyberNet Summer School 2024 in Review: Advancing Cybersecurity

The EU CyberNet Summer School 2024, held in Lisbon, focused on enhancing the cybersecurity capabilities of experts. Over three days, participants engaged in intensive discussions, hands-on exercises, and collaborative activities aimed at strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructures, with a particular emphasis on the maritime sector.

The first day laid foundation and kicked off with a deep dive into the challenges and resilience strategies for critical infrastructures within the EU. Experts Daniel Ioniţă and Sérgio Bryton led discussions on intra-EU cooperation, the impact of the Network and Information Security (NIS) Directive, and the emerging threats facing the maritime sector. Participants concluded the day with a hands-on ransomware attack simulation, focusing on port operations, which highlighted the importance of preparedness and rapid response.

Day 2 focused on building resilience and brought valuable insights into the governance and resilience of critical infrastructures, with a strong focus on maritime security. The morning sessions, led by Daniel Ioniţă, emphasized the need for cohesive strategies that integrate both public and private sector efforts. Expert Gonçalo Cadete delved into the governance challenges, particularly the crucial issue of trust within the supply chain. The day ended with a complex group exercise where participants tackled real-world cybersecurity challenges, enhancing their practical skills and strategic thinking.

The final day centered on applying the knowledge gained throughout the Summer School to real-world scenarios, particularly in the maritime sector. Sérgio Bryton’s session on cybersecurity strategies for maritime infrastructures set the stage for the day’s activities. Participants then engaged in a comprehensive maritime cybersecurity exercise, led by Daniel Ioniţă, which reinforced the importance of readiness and decision-making in dynamic environments.

As the EU CyberNet Summer School 2024 concluded, it was clear that the event had provided a valuable platform for the exchange of ideas, best practices, and practical skills. Participants reflected on the significant progress made in understanding and addressing the cybersecurity challenges facing critical infrastructures.
