Background

Against the global background of digitalisation, an exponential growth in the numbers of internet users and internet-connected devices and systems, there is a growing need for cybersecurity and respective expertise around the world. In the strategic European context, the importance of cybersecurity has certainly increased. Since the new European Commission took office, digital aspects have been set high in the agenda. This was highlighted in a speech by the President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen in the European Parliament on 27 November 2019: “ /…/ cyber security and digitalisation are two sides of the same coin. This is why cyber security is a top priority.” The approach was further strengthened by a package of strategic documents on advancing digitalisation presented by the Commission on 19. February 2020.
