EU CyberNet Summer School 2024 Day 1 Wrap-Up

The EU CyberNet Summer School 2024 commenced today in Lisbon with focus on advancing the cybersecurity capabilities of experts across the EU, with a particular focus on protecting critical infrastructures.

Participants engaged with experts Daniel Ioniţă and Sérgio Bryton in a thorough exploration of critical infrastructures, discussing challenges and the need for resilience in the event of crises. Experts explained critical infrastructures within the EU, intra-EU cooperation and resilience, and emerging challenges along the impact of legislative framework such as the Network and Information Security (NIS) Directive.

A key focus of the day was the maritime sector, an area of critical importance given its complexity and role in global trade. Speakers outlined the unique cybersecurity risks, assets and challenges are faced by maritime infrastructures, stressing the urgency of implementing robust, proactive security measures to protect this vital sector for world’s economy.

The day concluded with a hands-on group work on ransomware attack simulation, allowing participants to apply their knowledge. This exercise addressed the complexity of port operation and reinforced the importance of preparedness and quick response in mitigating cyber threats, providing participants with practical skills they can bring back to their organizations.
