EU CyberNet Experts Engage in High-Level Cybersecurity Governance Seminar in West Africa

From 14 to 16 May 2025, EU CyberNet Experts Cecilia Popa and Niculae Iancu actively contributed to the High-level Seminar on Cybersecurity Governance for Maritime Organisations in the Gulf of Guinea, held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The event brought together key regional and international stakeholders to strengthen cybersecurity capacity and governance in the maritime domain.

EU CyberNet Experts Lead Cecilia Popa and EU CyberNet Expert Niculae Iancu participated in a total of four expert panels throughout the three-day seminar, offering insights and sharing best practices on cybersecurity policy, risk management and the future of maritime cyber resilience.

Niculae Iancu took part in two thematic panels. The first, focused on cybersecurity policy development and strategies, examined the importance of cohesive national and sectoral strategies that align with evolving global cybersecurity challenges. The second panel addressed cyber risk management and threats, providing an in-depth look at current threat landscapes, risk assessment methodologies, and proactive measures for system protection.

Cecilia Popa moderated a panel on the application of cybersecurity in maritime and port environments, highlighting the complexities of securing operational technologies, achieving regulatory compliance and strengthening cyber resilience across interconnected supply chains. She also contributed as a panelist to a session on challenges and future directions in cybersecurity, where she spoke on the need for international collaboration, innovation-driven policies and addressing emerging gaps in cybersecurity governance.

The seminar convened high-level representatives from across West Africa, fostering robust dialogue and knowledge exchange on the future of cybersecurity in the region’s maritime sector.

The serminar was organised by the Interregional Maritime Security Institute of the Regional Academy of Maritime Sciences and Techniques in Côte d’Ivoirem, and funded by the European Union and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

EU CyberNet’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to supporting global cybersecurity capacity building efforts and promoting secure digital ecosystems in partner countries.
