EU CyberNet 1st Crash Course Brought Focus on Countering Cyberattacks

The 1st EU CyberNet crash course, led by cybersecurity expert and ethical hacker Joseph Carson focused countering cyberattacks: understanding attacks and building defences.

The half-day virtual crash course brought together EU CyberNet Expert Pool members in a new format for an interactive learning experience, designed to offer both theoretical and practical perspective on cyberattacks and their unfold.

“This pilot course marks a new step in EU CyberNet’s commitment to continuous learning and growing. We hope that these courses equip our Expert Pool members and cybersecurity experts with critical skills needed in today’s dynamic and rapidly evolving fast-moving threat landscape by offering interactive ways to learn.” – Cecilia Popa, EU CyberNet Experts Lead.

“Staying up to date and learning hacker techniques is one of the best ways to know how to defend your organisation from cyberattacks. This workshop helped to keep security professionals up to date on the latest exploits and vulnerabilities as well as the best way to defend and apply effective countermeasures.” – Joseph Carson.

Helping experts strengthen their own capacity to response incidents and make their system more robust was at the central focus. By offering theoretical and practical session that illustrates both offensive and defensive cyberattack tactics, Joseph Carson guided participants through the full lifecycle of a cyberattack – from reconnaissance and exploitation to privilege escalation and data exfiltration. Using different platforms and tools, he offered a walk-through of attack scenarios from real world, providing actionable advice on how to detect, prevent and mitigate threats at every stage.

Participants also explored how attackers may exploit weak credentials, maintain persistence and escalate, and discussed countermeasures. They gained insights into endpoint and identity security, OSINT methods and payload creation. Participants discussed effective ways to improve their organisation’s cyber resilience and defence: staying updated on current threats, understanding attackers’ perspective, strengthening endpoint and identity security, and implementing system hardening measures.
